So we should stop the one-time tax paid low interest loans to companies too? Or should billionaires pay their fair share.

By Americans' own choice. Nobody forced you to buy a $50k car on a loan you could never pay back. If most people just said no you could bike to work through a park. Or use the vehicle provided by your job. You though "If I'm the perfect bootlicker I could snipe this job from a local, I just need a fancy new car" And now your evil thoughts are coming to bite you.

These Americans (I hesitate to call them people) refuse to hold their leaders accountable for everything, they sit and watch as 07' is applied to every asset class and ask for the boot shoved down their throat. They'll even clap, after movies, but also after their leaders add 100%+ tariffs on Chinese EVs. Can't have anything threaten their debt addiction.

In most engineering fields we don't give the monopoly to people until they have actually demonstrated success beyond a reasonable doubt. There will always be groups of people claiming that the math/methods they happen to know are the best at explaining some behavior (even now there is that learning mechanics paper on top page)

The takeaway is to stop pretending that we can do good science when the ambiguity is so high, the majority of funding should go to people working on more concrete problems. We never locked in on vacuum tubes because the downsides were so obvious and the upsides of silicon transistors (if they could be made to work) were also obvious even to people outside the field, where your talent comes from. At the very least funders can't allow shifting goalposts, make them up front answer questions about the drugs. That will give you something to estimate the value of the drug and then when they come back with study after study outside the ranges they gave, you lower their funding. E.g. This is supposed to work on someone who was stage 2 and stop progression and then 5 years later it only "works" for stage 1 patients.

Strange breakthrough ideas can't even exist in the current system structurally, so going this route is the only logical choice. Which begs the question, why aren't clinical trials a private venture already? Governments are burning billions of taxpayer dollars for either nothing or cynically to keep the boomers alive and voting even longer, while 1/5 children are obese. For the rest of us we've socialized the risk and privatized the profits.

Did the British forget about 1812? Cos we will never.

I’m a Brit who lives in the US. Can confirm 99% of British people have never heard of the war of 1812, and even if they are a military history nerd and they have heard of it, they will consider it a minor sideshow to the main event of the era, which was Britain fighting France in the Revolutionary and Napoleonic wars from 1793-1815.

The US just wasn’t very important geopolitically 214 years ago. Sorry we burned y’all’s White House (ok not that sorry). Actually sorry we gave Andrew Jackson his opportunity to become famous by fighting a completely pointless battle after the war had already ended.

If you ask about "1812" in the UK, you'll get a lot of blank stares and a few people saying "The Overture?". That once piece by Tchaikovsky is almost certainly better known in the UK than not only the war but the sum total of all American events between the US war of independence and the US Civil War. I only know that the war of 1812 happened at all because I'm the right kind of nerd, and even then I know very little about it.

We don't need a house right now, we need food, scrap it and sell it.

Some years later: Alright now that food security has improved lets buy a house. Sorry most construction companies got put out of business by Humanitarian Builder Inc. and they just closed shop cos funding ran out. Contractors aren't building permanent businesses.

If the recipients could only afford a traditional mud + thatch home, the contractors building work was new additional demand, rather than competition against existing builders.

Even when first-world funding dries up, knowledge of the design, its features and benefits will remain. It's also cheaper than the alternative single-storey concrete home design, so perhaps generating new construction demand from people who couldn't quite afford the more expensive single-storey stone house but can afford this new design.

It's certainly an eye-opening unusual project, but I think it's a net gain for the region, even without a sustained/permanent first-world benefactor.

You would almost certainly have got a bigger next gain for the same cost if you gave the same people the money used to build the house.

7x GDP to an unbanked villager? It would be stolen / "shared" post haste.

This happened once with open sores now this behavior has turned up to 11. People taking dependencies they don't even know what, full of incorrect code, vulns intentionally or not, delegate everything take no responsibility.

Actually when they become illegal less people do them. The problem is that you view men (criminials) killing each other as a bigger loss than women being raped, killed and objectified. There is an optimal ballance, but you are unable to see it because of your bias towards dehumanizing women, caused by porn addiction.

Are you arguing that it's better that the sex or porn work is done illegally, without the ability to pay taxes, follow the law, forced into rh underworld and into the cartels and gangs?

Wow. That will certainly do better for sex trafficking and illegal porn. Criminalising all of it.

This is really only true for companies operating in old spaces. If you are on the ground floor of social media or roblox then there is no stigma against that fact that you are exploiting children, child labor, and profit on massively increasing the likelihood that they are exploited by predators

More that there is a poor incentive structure. Just like how PE can make money by leveraged buyouts and running businesses into the ground. Many of the financial instruments that make both that and the current AI bubble possible were legal then made illegal within the lifetimes of the last 16 presidents.

Round-tripping used to be regulated. SPVs used to be regulated. If you need a loan you used to have to go to something called a bank, now it comes from ???? who knows drug cartels, child traffickers, blackstone, russians & chinese oligarchs. Even assuming it doesn't collapse tommorow why should they make double digit returns on AI datacenters built on the backs of Americans?

My issue was not with criticism of the money being spent or how it’s being obtained. I was specifically commenting on this statement:

> “Im convinced none of these people have any training in corporate finance. For if they did they'd realise they were wasting money.”

This isn’t meaningful criticism. This is a vacuous “those guys are so dumb”.
