My school had a similar loophole: game weren’t allowed in the computer lab, unless you wrote it yourself…

Please don’t use red and green for the colors in the “check” mode, it’s hard to tell apart for colorblind people (especially against the partially shaded black squares).

In fact, there isn’t really a need for two colors. Just color the squares that are threatened by the pieces and leave the rest blank. The meaning will be obvious.

Off topic but this was the entire joke behind a South Park episode.

I would look for any other well-known formats that already have a dependable pipeline for rendering to a selectable text PDF. Perhaps LaTeX? Then make a converter to covert from markdown to that format.

These days it’s hard to be sure of anywhere you can paste a piece of text and be certain it’s not being sent to a server somewhere.
