Please don’t use red and green for the colors in the “check” mode, it’s hard to tell apart for colorblind people (especially against the partially shaded black squares).
In fact, there isn’t really a need for two colors. Just color the squares that are threatened by the pieces and leave the rest blank. The meaning will be obvious.
The date listed for the submission doesn't seem to be correct, the page has dated updates from 2006 and the latest version of the main source file [0] is from 2018
That computer (and chonky-boy floppy disk) look so unlike any real computer from back in the day that it honestly makes me question if the author knows anything about what that era was like.
I would look for any other well-known formats that already have a dependable pipeline for rendering to a selectable text PDF. Perhaps LaTeX? Then make a converter to covert from markdown to that format.
